SHOULD I SEE A MAKEUP ARTIST
When we are little girls we love to experiment with our mothers make-up. You steal away into their bedroom and put on all the things that make your mother, your mother. When we grow-up you try to find your own way. You experiment with different colors and brands until you find the things you like. Unfortunately, the things we like are not always the things that make us look our best. There are many things that have to be taken into consideration, skin color, facial shape and correction techniques that can enhance our faces.
Experimentation is a good thing, but when you plan on making your living with your face, you need to know how to make the best of your face. I suggest visiting a make up artist. She can help you find the things that work best with your particular face. She can show you how to apply make up not only for everyday use, but also for photographic shoot. Make up applied for a photographic assignments is different than what you would wear to the mall.
Spend some time and talk to different make up artists. Don't be afraid to ask for references. You want to find someone who has experience in dealing with photographic make up and someone who is easy to understand. She should be willing to take time and explain each step of the process. Take a look at the photographs of people she has prepared for a photographic assignment and remember it is important to look at black and white photos as well as color photos. Ask questions, like why are you using this color or brand on me as opposed to another? Ask her what facial shape you have because you, like every other woman who looks into a mirror sees only what you want to see. You don't see the skin imperfections or eyes that are to close set or lips that aren't straight. Make use of her eyes to help you find the best you.
A make-up artist is someone you will have to spend some time looking for. You are not going to find her at the local department store. The department store artists apply make up, yes, but they are there to sell a particular brand of make up and seldom will take the time that is needed to help you learn how to apply it properly. Spend some time talking to photographers in your area and have them suggest make up artist they have used for photographic assignments. They will be able to help you find a professional make up artist as opposed to someone who just puts make up on the face. There is a difference.
When you find someone you are comfortable with, be prepared to pay her for her time. She will charge you a fair hourly rate. After all, you would not model for free so why would you expect her to teach you the tricks of the trade for free. Hopefully, it will only take one session with a make up artist to learn what you need to know but if you require more than one session be willing to go back as often as neccessary to learn how to apply your make-up properly. After all your face in modeling is your fortune.
