WHO LOVES YOU BEST?

So you want to be a model but you just don't know where to start, but you have heard of some people who were discovered doing everyday ordinary things and that sounds good to you. Well, forget about a modeling career because it's just not going to happen that way. There are millions of pretty girls and boys out there and there is no reason to believe that you have anything they don't. Or do you? Are you willing to work at making yourself the best you can be. Are you willing to put yourself out there, to risk rejection in order to garner a little adulation. If you are, then maybe you do have what it takes to be a model.

You have to be a self starter, a self promoter. You have to know you have what it takes and carry on no matter what the last thousand people have told you. If you can do that then you have a fifty-fifty chance of becoming what you want to be, a MODEL.

To start, you must see people who are in the field. That means you need to talk, notice the key word in this sentence is talk, to agents, photographers, public relation people, ad writers, anyone who may be useful to your career. If you live in a small town then you must travel to a city near you on a regular basis. If you do live in a small town with at least one large major retailer, you can promote the idea of using local girls and boys to advertise their products in your area. You'll be surprised at how much interest you can muster up for that kind of campaign. You, of course, don't get paid for this kind of work but it does give you something you need, experience.

If you are able to travel to a metropolitan area, make appointments with model agents. Most of these will have a modeling school attached to them so be careful what you get yourself into. Take your pictures and ask them what they think. Listen to about half of what they say. Do not sign anything. Ask them what they are looking for and what kind of assignments they have. Make sure they are actively promoting models. There are some who keep a stable of people available just in case something comes along. That does not do you any good.

Talk to photographers, get to know their work and what they like or don't like, the photographer is your friend. He or she may know of work that they can slip you into. Take your pictures to him or her, who knows he may want to do test shots of you and you can never have enough pictures. Make sure they are professional photographers. Even studio photographers are a good source. The guy who shoots the family photo may also have a yearning to do ad work and may know of an assignment if he can only find the right model.

Don't let your ego get in your way. Starting out you are not worth $1500 a day and it will be awhile before you are. But don't sell yourself short. Ask for and accept a reasonable rate. Remember, you are your best agent, get out there and promote yourself. Don't wait to be discovered, because it is not going to happen.
